Dental pulp is the soft area in the middle of a tooth that contains the blood vessels, connective tissues, and nerve of the tooth. If the pulp becomes damaged or infected, Dr. Stacey Eby may recommend a root canal in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. During root canal treatment, our dentist will remove the infected pulp from the interior of the tooth. This procedure can save the tooth.
Before root canal therapy, our dentist will take an X-ray so he can observe the shape of the root canal and check for signs of infection in the nearby bone. The tooth and the surrounding area will then be numbed with a local anesthetic. Dr. Stacey Eby will make an access hole in the tooth through which the bacteria, decayed nerve, debris, and pulp are removed. After the interior of the tooth has been completely cleaned, the root canal is first filled and then sealed with a sealer paste and gutta percha. A filling is placed to fill the access hole. At this point, a dental crown is often prepared and placed over the treated tooth. The dental crown will protect and support the tooth, as well as restore its function.
